Chapter 1: Project Spindark

"Well, Mr. Nerezza, I believe your curiosity would have gotten the better of you by now. I could give you the white papers, but I doubt you would read through 300GB of written information in one night."
"You're right, I won't."
"Ask me all the questions about all you would like to know about the project."
"How are you involved in this?"
"I am the head of the Sulegna project, as you very well know. In truth, the Spindark and Sulegna projects are parallel in nature. However, the government put a higher priority on Spindark as it is of better utility to our government as a weapon."
"What do these projects do?"
"About a year ago, found evidence that the human minds generated certain waves. They were reported to have large amounts of energy, apparently enough to power powerful devices if harnessed correctly. Reito then decided that an attempt to make such devices be made. Three projects were started in response to the orders from the government. They were: Spindark, Sulegna and Sycic. The Sycic project was abandoned immediately as it allowed the creation of a very dangerous tool, one that could instantly allow anyone to read the future. Incidentally, the scientist saw the future and destroyed the project under authorisation from the government."
"What about Sulegna?"
"The Sulegna project was made to be more of a protective device. As it needed far more power, it was tested using the simulated waves; normal people could not operate it. We made several attempts to lower its power requirements, but to no avail. We asked the government to get us more funds to continue, but it turned us down it favour of the Spindark project. Our research came to a halt immediately when funding ran out. We all transferred to the Spindark project immediately. I became the second head of the project, directing the power reduction efforts in the project. The Spindark project was extremely difficult in testing. Whenever something went wrong with the containment unit, the whole lab would shut down and halt further research."
"So, you're the head of the Spindark project now?"
"No, I resigned a month ago to start my own search for the ones who could operate the devices. My search turned up only two people."
"And they were?"
"You, Angelo Nerezza and a 16-year-old girl named Yoriko Noda. The Spindark project was also beginning the search for her. I believe they've found here, but I have no news of her being acquired for testing. However, I have reason to believe that she will be abducted soon by another party other than us and the Reito government. We're not the only ones doing this research, so I've ordered some people to guard Ms. Noda until we can get you to come here."
"Do you have her?"
"No, somebody has kidnapped her and left a CF card behind. This is good news for us in a way. She'll be safe until we're ready. The kidnappers probably had access to government files and thought they could get some ransom money for returning her. That's where you come in."
"How do you know all this?"
"The Sycic project. I still hold a personal prototype to fool around with when I like. And before I forget, here's the Sulegna prototype."
"How do I use this sphere-shaped thing? Doesn't look like there’s a switch or anything on it."
"The switch is in your mind. The Sulegna project is a protective device. It will activate when you are under stress from danger or other factors. Same goes for the Spindark project. Of course, the Spindark prototype has a switch. It's too dangerous to activate at will, since it will deactivate every electrical appliance in the vicinity."
"Now, here's the instruction manual. All 3000 pages of how to do everything with your Sulegna!"
"...this is seriously heavy reading..."
"Jokes aside, you need to read that properly. I believe that Ms. Noda will not be safe in her abductors hands for too long. She will be easily detected by the Spindark people. For the meantime, you should rest. Your room is waiting for you upstairs. If you can't sleep, I suggest you read the manual as much as you can. I expect you to be able to at least know what it can do."
"OK, so when do we go save Ms. Noda?"
"Don't think about that yet. Focus on reading the manual. We start off tomorrow at 9 a.m. We have no time to waste."

I thought there was something fishy. She told me everything, but left me with nothing but a small shiny ball and a thick manual. I decided to give up some sleep to find out more. I had already slept on the plane anyway.
I read the first chapter: "Installation Instructions". It was going to be a long night.
